In my private practice as a Psychologist and a Marriage Counselor; I find that at times couples will come in for marriage counselling when it’s too late. As soon as you feel that there are problems in your marriage; it is a good time to have a counselling session. As the saying says “A stitch in time saves nine”.

Just like you never medicate yourself, similarly, you shouldn’t try and solve serious marital issues yourself. Given below are seven signals, signs, or indicators that you should meet a counsellor to discuss your issues.

You aren’t talking:

Communication is the most important part of marriage, the couple need to have open channels of communication with each other. Messages aren’t conveyed to each other via children or others

You’re talking, but it’s always negative talk:

You talk to each other, but the talk is always negative, you are either criticizing each other or finding fault with each other or your spouses family

You’re afraid to talk:

It is more convenient to avoid talking, as talking leads to fights, arguments and unpleasantness.

Affection, intimacy and sex are withheld as punishment:

Either of the spouses decides to be the “punisher” by withholding affection, and intimacy

You keep secrets:

While each individual is entitled some privacy in a relationship, to keep secrets in a marriage not a sign of a healthy relationship

You contemplate (or are having) an affair:

An affair is not only a signal of unfulfilled sexual desires but also a lack of something in the marriage. If a spouse is fantasizing about having an affair or is having an affair; it is time to meet a marriage counselor.

You’re living separate lives:

If your lives are independent, and you are living together as roommates than it is time to meet a psychologist to heal and repair the marriage.
